The first 150m are flat and shallow depending on the tide. Tidal range is about 1m at the most. The lagoon sometimes even runs dry. There are areas of corals and water plant which are easy to see. Besides from very low tide you can always kite above them. After the 150m the water gets deep and a bit wavy if the wind is strong. Somewhere are some reefs but not dangerous. The two shallow reefs are marked by two flags. This is the entry area to the deep water for the windsurfers. About a 1km from the coast is another shallow reef area. Shoes are a good idea because of some pointed shells.
The lagoon in front of Sultana Hotel is perfectly nice for teaching beginners. Shallow area is 300 meters wide and 400 meters long when normal NNW direction is blowing.
Wind conditions are similar to El Gouna and Magawish, so good winds all year round, with best from May to October. However: A bit more onshore than El Gouna and due to its location upwind of the city not as gusty as Magawish in NW winds.
Officially no launching and landing from the hotel beach. There is no windsurfing center any more in the hotel, just a few crap boards and sails left. There is big sandy beach beside Sultana, which is much more siutable for kiters.
09-04-14 Unknown: Right now there's a russian kite station at the beach besides the hotel. They take about 25 l.e. (4.5USD) per day for kiting. The place is really great if you just want to kitesurf - the beach is 100m from your hotel room's door. The water keeps flat even when in other places (calimera, panorama bungalows, el khayam) it becomes choppy, because of reefs located around the place in 1-2kms from the shore. Conditions in hotel are 2* max. Food is not so good, but you can always get to the city by taxi (about 10-15 l.e.) or by local mikrobuses (about 0.5 - 1 l.e. per trip) with one change in dakhar.
So, probable it's one of the best kitespots (i mean "spot" only) around Hurghada.
