The Meltemi occurs mainly during the summer season (June to September with 70%), but also in May and October one may frequently experience this dry wind. One should anticipate its maximum during July and August. Usually the wind starts in the early afternoon reaching 4-5 Bft and dies out at sun set. However, not uncommonly it reaches 6-7 Bft during the day, perseveres during the night and blows 6-7 Bft again the next day; a pattern which can easily be repeated over many days, sometimes even up to ten days. This bay has some of the strongest winds in the Cyclades, created by a venturi that is formed by the squeeze caused by Naxos and the neighboring island of Paros. Very often, it's 4/5 Beaufort in the bay and only 2 Beaufort all over the island of Naxos. Mainly sideshore to sideonshore winds. It can blow very strong with 35-40 knots and be very gusty.
By Airplane: from the `Eleftherios Venizelos` airport in Athens, you may fly to Naxos using one of the following airlines: Olympic Airways, Hellenic Star The airport of Naxos is about 1km outside Naxos Town (Chora/Hora) and you may use one of the taxis outside the airport. By ferry boat: if you arrive at the airport in Athens you can take Ferries to Naxos from either the port of Pireaus or Rafina. Then drive south to Mikri Vigla and get to the North beach.
09-08-23 Unknown: i've been in august 2009.the wind blows every day, is strong and guesty. from 8a.m.to 11.a.m is less strong and is good for beginner and wing about 10 mt then go up till 40 knt or more with chopp so is raccomended wing 6/7/8 mt. at the kitecenter/school/cafe is possible rent equipment but there isnt much availability. the safeguard measures aren't enougth, they havent't a boat able to rescue with strong condition.
enougt space to lounch and landing kite in a wide sandy beach.
a lot of wind surfer in the same spot
09-07-28 Unknown: I found the spot very treacherous. The wind can be very gusty, it can go from 25 to 35 knots in a second and every mistake can be penalized. I am kiting for 4 years and I've traveled to several spots in this time, but this one is very radical. Should have taken care: there are rocks under the water and I almost broke a leg when caught under one and the kite moved. Also, there's little interest from the staff of the spot for the safety: one person cannot take care of all the troubles. Finally, there are lots of windsurfers and they are afraid to help if something happens as it was my case but I have to thank one of them for stopping a released kite. Other than this, you can have all the fun!
05-12-09 kaoki: very good spot but the wind can blow very strong about 35-40 knots and be very guesty. so be carefull and have fun.
