Flat to small chop. The Pamlico Sound is a huge waist deep water area. On the ocean side nice waves up to 6m high, depending on wind direction and swell.
Season from March to November. Year-round possible if you ride on the warmer SW winds with warm water currents. Wetsuits needed beginning and end of the year, just shorts from late spring to early fall. Warm gulf-stream ocean currents keep air and water temperatures warm nearly year-round.

In June and July 90% wind from SW. Starts at 3pm, strongest at 7pm and lasts until sunset. In August and September the wind is not consistent. In October and November 70% wind. In December to February windy almost daily. In March to May frontals and winds from SW, NW and NE. Main directions: NE and SW. The soundside works in: W, NW, N, NE, E. The ocean-side works in W, SW, SE, E.
Easiest is a rental car. Follow the signs to the Outer Banks from Norfolk (route 168S and then 158S). Then take route 12 south all the way down and pass Frisco. Located between Frisco and Hatteras. This dirt turnout is right off the highway, soundside. Also park here if you want to access the oceanside.
Stay out of the bird closure area. The areas are well marked with signs and further rules. Beware of power lines. Good launch or landing from Frisco/Hatteras downwinders.
