At the end of Clacton beach, called the Martello, there are 4 large bays sheltered by large rock jetties, to help beach erosion, which means the water is dead flat when winds are side and sideonshore.

Sunbathers and swimmers normally stick to the main beach of Clacton, but there are 4 bays further west with plenty of space and plenty of sand for easy set up and launching of kites. 3mm wetsuit in the summer, 5mm in spring and autumn. Surfing is all year round for those who don't mind the cold. The sea is up at 16°C in summer and down to 8°C in winter. Season May to October.
