The wind gets a venturi effect around the volcano.The venturi acceleration is mostly along the north side as the easterlies are compressed against the volcano. When a cold front hits, the winds blows from North on the whole island. With a Konas winds will blow from South. In autumn the summer heat begins to cool, the trades start to decrease as we are visited by the low pressure cells from the North/West) and the winter waves start to make their appearance on the North Shore. October is the beginning of the glassy mornings with great surf conditions followed by moderate to strong afternoon winds. When the high pressure gradient fills back in the trades come roaring back sometimes with meaty north swells that make for heavy surf/kite sessions. So goes the whole winter; trades, variables, Konas (South/SW winds). From the end of October to the end of March from week to week it can change any time. The West side (Kihei and all areas north of Lahaina) works on both trades and Konas. Konas winds are more consistent and steady but only occur typically maybe 5 times a winter and can range from 10-30 mph. When we have radical Konas storms they really rip and can be dangerous. Trades on the other hand can be gusty, unpredictable, and full of holes. Most Kihei launches tend to be shallow and reefy but with nice sandy beaches. It's a completely different feel from the Kite Beach area. Much more congested and full of tourist. |
