The water quality is ok, but discolored due to the silt of the Severn estuary. There is also a very large tidal range (10+m) and so this beach can only be surfed 3 hrs either side of high tide. Otherwise there is a very high danger of sinking in the mud. Also look out for the numerous wooden posts placed seemingly at random around the beach by the council. With westerlies with a touch of northerly this gives nice waves approx 1-2m with nice flat areas in between. The south end of the beach is great for this especially at high tide (11+m tides) but is the shallowest so can only be done at high water. There is also a North to South rip which runs at about 1-2 knots. In southerly Uphill makes a great flat area but only 1hr around high tide.
Usual UK conditions dictated by low pressure systems tracking in from West. Spring wetsuit for summer otherwise full steamer required. Can sail all year round if you are hardy enough.
Dictated by low pressure systems tracking in from West. SW winds are gusty due to rota over Brean Down. Best conditions are westerly with a touch of northerly. Also in the sea breeze season if there is about 5 knots West and it is a sunny day with an afternoon tide the wind will pick up to 20 knots.
Kites must launch at the most southern part of the beach. The council have made noises in the past about regulation so please launch at the south end and keep away from people. Also keep well away from swimmers and maintain separation from the windsurfers.
