Usually the water is a bit choppy if it's blowing good but can be flat also. Low tide the water is only 1-3ft deep. The water is shallow at low to medium tide, up to a half mile out, you still can be waist deep at low tide. When the wind blows over 25 knts, you get a 2-4 foot chop in the sound.
Beach is mostly sand with a few shells and rocks here and there but not enough that you need to wear booties. This beach is long, maybe a mile going East to Eest but is good sand, although you can get lots of seaweed if it blows hard from the SE.
Water temps in the summer are around 65°F. Air temps in the summer range from 70-90°F. Water is warm during the summer (June, July, August), but it's not a bad idea to bring a shorty in case you get cold.
Summer months are the best, usually we get 2-3 days per week of good S-SW winds. Best conditions in Southeast to South to Southwest and West winds. Mostly Southwesterly (predominately), in summer to West (sideshore). One can expect Southwesterly winds every day around 20 knts in the afternoon because of a thermic with the islands.
Take Route 6E to exit 8 (Union Street). Take right at end of off ramp and follow Union Street till end at intersection of Route 28. Take left onto Route 28 and cross over the Bass River Bridge. Take right at Ken's Auto Body onto School Street and follow until road bends to the left. Take right onto Lighthouse Road and follow to end.
Access has been restored, it was banned before. During the season there is only 1 launch point which is located towards the end of the beach (near the jetty). Off-season you may launch anywhere West of Chair 11 but not East of it. (Stay away from the Windsurfing area at Chair 9!). During peak season respect other beach goers as crowds can become large. Also during the weekend the launch area can become overly crowded with kiters so make sure you wrap your lines or fold up any extra kites you may have been using earlier in the day. The water is shallow so watch your landings if your jumping also please don't jump closer than 100 feet from the shoreline. Kiting is allowed at the far western side and windsurfing about 1/4 mile east, this is in the summer months, after September 1st you can go anywhere you wish. From Memorial Day to Labor Day there is a $10.00 parking fee.
