You get some super smooth areas between waves that is awsome to get up your speed up then you hit the waves using them as ramps for massive air. There is a channel on one side that can get choppy but you can use to get out the back to fabled surf break Box Head if the conditions are right. With a southerly to SE swell you get these big sets coming in that if you get out the back you can ride. At low tide you get lagoons forming between the sand banks that have glassy water. The good thing about this place is you get shallow water for about 200m out in one section you also get waves and flat water. It's great for freestyle riding or just going for long cruises.

The beach is about 2 km long and it's all sand. The beach is maybe 100m wide which is good for launching/landing where we kite from is up the eastern end of the beach near the channel. Here were have maybe half a kilometer down the beach towards the surf club and 200 m from the channel. The best entry point is at the bed and breakfast on the corner you can't miss it. The only thing you have to worry about is the road which runs parellel to the beach there is power lines there but their is plenty of space to avoid them. Also if your going to go near the surf clubs be out past the last break and if your learning just stay away as the surf gets bigger down there.

The wind when it blows from the South averages about 12-18 knots but of course like any other place it gets its windy days and bad days but it is generally pretty reliable. The main winds around here are Southerly and Northeasterlis (seabreezes) in summer and spring. In autumn you don't get much wind and in winter you get W, SW and S. This place works with anything with South in it (SW is dangerous, be careful!) but if the wind is from somewhere else there are other beaches within 40 minutes drive. Your quiver should be a kiteboard, surfboard a 8/10m, 12/14m, 16/18m. Umina only works in SE through to SW with SSE at low tide being the best conditions. Autumn is the no wind period, but in the NSW region but you may get lucky.
