Excellent waves. As with most of the Durban beaches there is consistent surf year round. Look out for surfers as there are often a few around in the lighter winds. All of Durban's beaches are shark netted.
Durban is situated on the East Coast of South Africa and enjoys a warm sub-tropical climate year-round with temperatures in the mid to low twenties even in winter. Water about 20°C.
Umhlanga works from NNE through to SW. The windy season for Durban runs from about September to March but has wind throughout the year. The prevailing wind is NNE (sideonshore). While Durban offers excellent safe kitesurfing beaches the North and South coast offer epic uncrowded conditions with good point breaks that work in winds from NE through to SW. Umhlanga is located approximately 15 km North of Durban. Rental car is essential when visiting Durban as there is no public transport that will enable you to get to Durban's beaches or beaches up the North coast or down the South coast.
