The summer months the water can reach 80°F. In the winter it gets down to 50°F. The kiting season here is year round. Wetsuits are necessary from November to April.
The wind blows here at least 3-4 days during the week. The wind averages from 10-15. Sometimes it blows 15-20+. Watch out for West winds, they can be gusty. Best winds in fall. Works good in E, NE and SE. Reliable thermal sea breezes from May to August. Nice winds with cooler Northeasters. Winter and spring are the best times to come here for empty beaches and nice winds.
Take I-95 towards Savannah GA, Exit on highway 16 east to Savannah. Come into downtown Savannah and hit Bay Street. Go to the end of Bay Street and turn left on President Street. Follow President Street until it turns into Highway 80, follow 80 for 20 mins and you will run into Tybee Island. US 80 becomes 1st Street. Where this street hits the beach and makes a right turn and becomes Butler Ave, park on the meter and get to the beach. Pay the meter, otherwise you will get a ticket or towed.
Since the beach is rounded, any sideshore wind can be offshore a bit further downwind. Kiters must wear kite leashes on Tybee Island. Impact harnesses are suggested. Do not kite alone. Stay away from the jetties marked by poles further North.
