People surf beyond (downwind) of the harbor wall where it is sheltered from the wind, so you have flat water. Definitely not recommended to kitesurf the windward side of the harbor wall. The best riding is 3 hours either side of high tide. The shore break can be very nasty around high tide. Rock groynes (apart from the Eastern end of the beach) are a hazard at high tide when the sea state is rough(or when wind is from the south). The beach is the best in the area for low tide sailing as it is sand bottom and not to shallow (never a long walk to the water).
3mm wetsuit in the summer, 5mm in spring and autumn. Surfing is all year round for those who don't mind the cold. The sea is up at 16°C in summer and down to 8°C in winter. Season May to October.
Head to Brighton seafront. When you're there head west along the coast road. Shoreham is around 20min away. Connections by train or bus are not good. By car easy entry from London via the A23/A24 via the A27 coastal road. Exit at Shoreham Flyover, follow signs into Shoreham By Sea. Straight over roundabout by the two pubs (Red Lion and Amsterdam). Next roundabout take last exit (over river bridge), next roundabout take first exit onto Shoreham Beach.
There is a designated Windsurfing area located at the west end of the beach. Look for signs to Widewater Car Park when entering Shoreham Beach from the roundabout. Car Park charges only apply during April to September and is £1.00 per day. Please note that there is a 2m height barrier on the car park entrance.
04-06-24 No. 2: Shoreham is a good place for learners and experienced kitesufers. The amount of space allows you to practice body dragging over a long distance. The wind is normally quite smooth compaired to locations abroad. The waves offer great ramps for jumps. This was where I learnt and I still go back. The only thing it needs is an Egyptian climate.
