Flat to choppy. Some 3' shore break in higher winds. Some little reef breaks close to shore. Some shallow areas near shore. Very clean, clear water and turquoise spots in shallow areas. May not be too interesting for those wanting waves. A mellow spot.
Soft, white sand. Beach is wide enough to launch. The sand in Playa is white sand, not powder. Powder sand is found in Cancun. White sand is more coarse, like salt. The sand gets quite hot during the day. On real hot days you may need to wear sandals unless you walk along the water's edge. You will definitely need sun glasses for the glare off the white sand.
Fly to Cancun. Take a collective van to Playa del Carmen, only a one hour drive south. Book an all-inclusive hotel in advance. Or find a cheap guest house in Puerto Morelos which is a bit closer to Cancun and not a tourist town.
Local kitesurfers launch just at the north end of the tourist zone of Playa, but beginners should obviously not. In Puerto Morelos the beaches are empty. Just inland of Puerto Morelos is a large swamp so there may be mosquitoes and insects there. The town is very safe and decent with nice architecture.
04-07-30 foka: if you could take out of the scenery all the turists, boats, parasailing and jet-skies it will be a real kite paradise.
kiting is allowed only north of coco beach and in some playa-car beaches.
Playacar fase 1 is a residential area on the beach south of laya del carmen, playacar fase 2 is the hotel zone with big all inclusive hotels on the beach.
