Kailua is a bay which has a nice sandy beach that is enjoyed by many beach goers. The beach is lined by houses and often the beach is packed with people. Because of it's ideal design, many beginners come to Kailua. There have been many problems with kites in trees, yards, on people, etc. The Kailua Neighborhood Board is avidly trying to ban kiting at Kailua. We ask all visitors to be very safe and cautious when launching and landing, which must be done in the designated area at the very left of the beach park.

Kailua is a bay with sideonshore wind coming from the right which is great because if something goes wrong, you always drift into shore. As does your gear. Wind is usually light but constant 10-16mph. Average kiting days/week in summer: 3-5, winter: who knows. When Kailua gets good wind, it's an awesome location. Unfortunately that happens maybe a total of 2 months/year. Ideal wind direction is NE, which is the most common direction. Fall/winter/spring is a crap shoot. Most of the wind originates from passing storms, so when there is wind it is usually stronger 12-25mph, but we can go months without wind.
