Quite choppy but this is mint to launch off. Low tide is best here as high tide gets deep very quickly. Can kite right into the Waitamata Harbour but watch for big ships. This place is not for beginners.
In summer the beach gets incredably crowded. Car parking is near impossible on a hot summers day so don't come here in these conditions. The beach itself is sandy with ample room to launch a kite. Just don't annoy other water/beach users.
Best direction here is NW which is sideonshore. Not a light wind spot. Needs at least 25 knots to be worth a visit here. Strong NW winds aren't common in Auckland but can occur at anytime of the year. As mentioned before not a seabreeze spot. Suited to strong winds for less crowded conditions. Don't use a big kite here. This beach works at anytime of the year so long as there is a strong NW wind which can appear anytime of the year. These winds though are generally rare in Auckland.
From Auckland city just drive along the waterfront past Kelly Tartons and Fergs Kayaks and eventually you'll get to this crowded spot and this is Mission Bay. Good luck finding a park.
Do NOT kite here if sunny 10 knots as it will be very packed. There are no hard and fast rules laid down but just use common sense. This place is the busiest beach in Auckland and is only suiteable to kite in if it's blowin very hard. This is not a spot for grovelling or beginners. You need to know how to relaunch your kite. ALLWAYS use a kite leash here. There are no exceptions!
