This is one of the best surfing beaches around Sydney. Consistently gets whatever waves are around and works with southerly and northerly swells. Water is clean except after heavy rain, when storm water from the streets polutes the beach.
The beach is about 1 km long, nice white sand with rocky section at the northern corner. Never kite in the northern end of the beach, as the cliffs at this end of the beach make the wind gusty, and the rocks in the water can catch you out. Pump up on the grass behind the skate park if you like.
Best kiting in the Aussie summer, but any time between October to April can be good. Can occasionally work at any time of the year. Summer time: NE and SE seabreeze. Winter time: SE pressure systems. The beach fases ESE, making NNE and SSW sideshore.
1) Always check with the life guards before kiting at Maroubra! 2) Only 3 kites allowed on the water at any time. 3) Surfers always have right of way! Keep a good distance from any surfers - this is for your own good, the locals at Maroubra are not known for their hospitality! You need to be an AKSA (Australia Kitesurfing Association) member if you want to kite at Maroubra. The Beach inspectors will ask you to show your green AKSA tag and if you don't have it, they wont let you kite there. This is mainly for insurance coverage purposes.
