The beach is awesome full of palmtrees. Nice white soft sand. There are special area for launch and land kites, which is very tiny. Many beach bars, restaurants and hotels. Enough space to safely land and lauch kites but limited space on the beach.
The air temperatures varies from 27-33°C year around. Water temperatures arround 28°. No Wetsuit neccessary but lycra and pant for sun protection, but a shorty sometimes at late afternoon or early mornings on "winter time". Very stable sunny weather conditions all year round.
Nice wind in the mornings picking up during the day. At midday it´s blowing...at 15:00 it´s epic...at 17:00 it´s decreasing a bit. Gusty winds, further out less gusty. Almost every day there´s wind. Some months are 100% with more than 4Bf every day. Always sideshore from the left (East). Best time for kiting in El Yaque is from October to the end of July. During the months of February to May, wind can be very strong and a bit more gusty from midday on. Such days are perfect to explore some of the other spots around Margarita. From August to the end of September our wind gets often interrupted for one or more days by tropical depressions approaching the Carribean. The windy days are then blessed with very constant wind but require generally bigger kites. Typical kite sizes for 176lbs/80kg: 14m 40%, 10m 40%, 8m 10%, rest 10%. Very gusty at the launch, you need to walk in the water a bit.
You can flight directly to Isla Margarita - Porlamar Airport. Or you can also fly to Caracas-Venezuela and there are many daily flights to Porlamar every hour. 45 minutes flight (around 60 USD).
When you reach the Porlamar Airport you could also see the kites on the water from the plane on daytime. It´s only 5 minutes taxi to El Yaque (around 5USD).
The most relaxed way of kiting: Take the shuttle (boat) to kitebeach, start from there and sail outside in the swell or enjoy a nice long downwinder back to El Yaque. Here you can land right at the windward side of the beach in front of a kitecenter, the only place upwind from the windsurf area, and the only place where you can legally start and land your kites all day long. In the windsurf area, downwind from this center and in front of the hotels you are allowed to enjoy kiteboarding before 9:30am and after 5:30pm. This restriction is a rule all windsurf and kiteboarding clubs set up together in order to ensure safety for all beach and water users. Other spot with beautiful condition at 15 minutes boat distance like Coche Island or Cubagua Island.
06-09-20 Peter: I went there this year 2 times feb. 06 and with easter! It was great! Perfect conditions. One of the best kitespots...
For riding and learing.
The teacher was great (Wim Vermeulen @ Planet Kite center) www.kitevenezuela.com I will go back in 2007 that's for sure!!!
05-12-19 Noriega: I was the one with the wind, terrible flatulence.
05-07-17 Pez: This place is a awful. Will never return... the luanch area is comedy... if it wasn't so dangerous.
05-06-06 Nils: I was there this year (2005) around easter, i admit i just learned kitesurfing then but we did have very good wind every day.
05-01-18 gmc: very disapointing. only 2 windy days in dec 04, very small launching area, highly overcrowded and fucking gusty winds!!!
05-01-13 Bruce: Last two December January periods at this spot have not lived up to the wind stastic touted by many websites. I have just have 10 days there 1st-11th Jan 2005 and had 2 days of wind!!! Many complaining of similar statistics...
05-01-09 Alex: I was dissapointed of that spot. No launching area and overcrowded.
Difficult to lauch the kite because of wind shade.
If you cannot relauched the kite immediately you end up in the windsurf area!!
Wind is sideoffshore and if you need rescue it is expensive!! US 20. Accomodations are too expensive for venezuelan standard!
I left the place after 2 weeks!
