Very flat and shallow water on the sound side. Low waves on the ocean side. The Hatteras island is only 300 yards wide at this point. So you can either ride on the ocean side (East) or on the sound side. On the ocean side nice waves up to 6m high, depending on wind direction and swell.

Sandy Beach. On the sound side, be careful since the power lines are nor very far from the shore. Launch south of the windsurfing area, where the distance between the power lines and the beach is greater. Large sandy beach on the ocean side.

Season from March to November. Year-round possible if you ride on the warmer SW winds with warm water currents. Wetsuits needed beginning and end of the year, just shorts from late spring to early fall.

Best is SW, very steady and warm. In June and July 90% wind from SW. Starts at 3pm, strongest at 7pm and lasts until sunset. In August and September the wind is not consistent. In October and November 70% wind. In December to February windy almost daily. In March to May frontals and winds from SW, NW and NE. Main directions: NE and SW. If the wind turns more easterly, you can ride on the ocean. Then SE and NE will be sideonshore.

Easiest is a rental car. Follow the signs to the Outer Banks from Norfolk (route 168S and then 158S). Then take route 12 South all the way down and pass Avon. Located between Avon and Buxton. Park on the soundside and walk over highway 12 to access the ocean side.
