Clean blue water. OK all tides, not much sand at high tide, waist deep low tide. Quite flat at low tide, up to 2 foot chop, no surf. Don't go too far South, as the water gets deep quickly.

Land at Dunedin airport, minibus to town, car towards Taiaroa Head Albatross Colony, next town past Portobello is called Harwood, Kokamuka St/Stepney Ave is best. Possibly on bus route.
