Grossenbrode has always choppy water. When there´s enough wind the waves get a little bigger but you can´t expect real waves. In the water there are some rocks. Please make sure you know where they are because you do not see them from the beach. Please ask the locals. Right in front of the beach the water is flat so it is recommended for beginners. In summertime there is a swimmer's zone, marked with 4 buoys, in front of the beach to the left.
There´s a big parking lot (for free) right behind a nice but small beach. Between the beach and the parking lot is a small dyke. Please do not start your kite at the dyke as there have been some serious accidents! Start your kite at the beach. The parking lot, dunes and beach are a natural reserve, make sure to use the existing ways and access only.
A wetsuit is necessary nearly all over the year. The water is between 5-20°C (spring to summer), air temperature is in the average 18°C (in summer) and can go up to 30°C. If you have the adequate wetsuit you can surf from April to November. Off-season is possible but very cold.
You go in direction of the island Fehmarn (A1 North from Hamburg", but take the last exit "Grossenbrode" before the bridge (Fehmarnsundbruecke). Turn left, over the small bridge over the highway and in the curve left (here you see a bigger building). Follow the road (speedlimit 30 km/h!) and at the end (before it gets smaller) turn left and drive that road until you see the parking lot to the right. Parking only allowed from 8.00 Uhr to 21.00.
In summertime there is a swimmer's zone, marked with 4 buoys, in front of the beach to the left, do not kite there. But as there happened some serious accidents make sure that you know where the stones are in the water and you launch your kite at the beach, not at the dam! Don´t kite there at gusty conditions. Since there is a highway close by always use a leash. Beginners: please do not use this spot if there is wind from Nordwest/West, because this is onshore wind. Some serious accidents happened in this conditions. Keep the parking lot, dunes and beach very clean, it is a natural reserve.
07-04-26 Toby: Riding in the swimmer zone can cause problems if swimmer's are around. Please respect the zone, or the spot gets closed. Be very careful with the stones in the water!
