Fresh water, smooth up at the top (windward side), choppy for the rest. The top is very shallow (waist deep) for a couple hundred feet, then it starts getting deeper. Spring fed, very clean and clear. The water is shallow around the top of the lake, about waist deep, it gets deeper the further away you are from the northern side. If you want waves, you can ride on the ocean side with very nice waves which can get very big.

The shallow water and sandy beach make this the best place to learn in Oregon. There is a sandy beach up at the top of the lake, and for the first half of one side. Make sure if you go downwind you don't go past where you can still land on the beach, as past the edge of the lake has thick brush and trees covering it, which make landing impossible. There is a beautiful campground right on the lake. Stay there and not only do you get a great view of the lake, but you are a couple minute walk away from the beach.

It can get warm, but it is still the Oregon coast. The water stays around the same temp as the air, so it can get real warm.

North wind during summer, March through October is the season. The wind is steady except for `holes` in certain spots that will make it seem gusty. If you want steady wind you can ride on the ocean side. 10m-8m kites are average here, so make sure you bring a kite that can handle a lot of wind (20+ mph.) On the north end of the lake the North winds blows off ot sideoffshore, but on the west side of the lake North blows sideshore. Since it is a lake all directions will work.
