There are two spots: bay of Wulfener Hals and the seaside. In the bay there is perfectly flat water and a big shallow area. On the side of the sea, there is choppy water, sometimes small waves (like in Meeschendorf). During the season the bay is very crowded with windsurf beginners, because you can stand in the water in the whole bay. The seaside is deep water, so not recommended for beginners.
A wetsuit is necessary nearly all over the year. The water is between 5-20°C (spring to summer), air temperature is in the average 18°C (in summer) and can go up to 30°C. If you have the adequate wetsuit you can surf from April to November. Off-season is possible but very cold.
From Hamburg drive north on the A1. Follow directions to Puttgraden and go over the bridge to Fehmarn. Take the first exit of the highway, turn right and follow signs to Wulfen and the Camping area of Wulfener Hals.
Surfers argue whether it is allowed to kitesurf or not. In summertime the spot is overcrowded by windsurfers anyway. Please use other spots like Meeschendorf (southern wind) or Gruener Brink (at eastern wind). But in wintertime (October to April) sometimes the spot is nearly empty. Launching from the camping side not allowed.
