The water is quite flat, chop starts around upper 5 Bft. There's a huge area with waist to chest-deep water, good for practicing. In summer, there can be a lot of seaweed.

It's mainly a dyke full of stones. Launching and landing is a bit tricky, but if you know how (the locals will show you) it's no problem. Never try to launch a kite on the dyke, though.

 Weather
Spring:

Summer:
- Shorty
- Normal Wetsuit

Fall:
- Normal Wetsuit
Winter:
- Thick Wetsuit / Drysuit

Season from April to October with air from 10-30°C and water from 10-20°C. Wetsuit always recommended. Off-season is possible, but thick wetsuit, mask, shoes and gloves are needed. Although, the shallow water areas are a bit protected from the sea-currents and usually heat up faster in spring. If you're lucky, you'll hit one or two days in a season where surfing in shorts is possible - usually a 2mm shortarm and a 5mm full suit will get you going from end of April to mid November.

Since there's a well protected shallow area, it's possible to kite in slightly offshore winds. Orth has a small harbor for fishers and boats going and coming quite frequently, and most of the fishers already know how to rescue a kitesurfer (but mostly they will tow you into the shallow area, tangling your lines). Best directions is West, all southerly directions are acceptable, North wind is dead offshore. Easterly winds are gusty. In summer, you might find island related thermal effects that kick in around 4pm and get you going on a 20m. Since the shore has a 90° angle more wind directions work.

Edit  How to get there
Transport:
- Car
Access:
- Medium Walk

Fehmarn is to be found at the northern end of the Autobahn 1 (A1). You just pass the bridge and take the first exit, turning left. Now, just follow the main road for about 12km and it will directly lead you to Orth. Drive through Orth to the habor, park your car and walk West around the harbor and there you will see the dykes.

Edit  Rules, Restrictions and Extra Info
Rules:
- Restricted Zones
- Other

Following rules apply: do not remove any stones from the dyke. Never launch a kite while standing on the dyke, always go into the water. Avoid onshore winds since the dyke and its stones can be very dangerous. On the far end of the west bay, there's an area to be used by seabirds only. Please respect the windsurfing areas (they usually stick quite close to the town, downwind). Don't drop your kite in the channel for the fishing boats (marked with buoys). Use your common sense.
