It all depends on the tide. Low tide: mud flats and 6 inches of butter-smooth water for a mile from shore. High tide: 12 inches to 7 feet of water with the flats closer to shore .
Wind is fickle, but when it's too windy on the ocean side this spot is deffinatly a perfect fall back. Winds are usually in the 12-20mph range and can be gusty at times. This is a summer spot only as you need southern/northern winds for this spot to go off.
Drive North on I-205 from Portland until it merges with I-5. Take I-5 north to the Long Beach Peninsula Exit. Follow the signs all the way to the Long Beach Peninsula. Spot is near the old Ilwaco airport on the way in. Just head to the Ilwaco Airport (deserted) and look for a break in the trees on the bay side. Park and Ride.
